What is Feudalism?

Feudalism is the social hierarchy of Medieval Europe. It is described as relationships between lords and their vassals. The nobles and knights were the vassals of the king and queen. Also, knights were nobles' vassals.Because peasants owned no land, they were not a part of the feudalism hierarchy. Many peasants worked on either a noble's or a knight's land.

The Crusades

The First Crusade
The thought of the crusades was sparked when Turkish Muslims attacked Christian pilgrims who were heading to the Holy Land. Pope Urban told the Christians to attack the Muslims to get back the Holy Land. Thus began the first crusade. Even though they were trying to get Jerusalem, the church gained power. The crusaders went to the Holy Land. Eventually, they successfully took Jerusalem.
The Second Crusade
The victory of the first crusade didn't last long. In 50 years the Muslims took back Jerusalem. The French and German king took off in 1147. The Second Crusade was a complete failure.
The Third Crusade
In 1189 the kings of Germany, France, and England went to the Holy Land with an army with only one goal, take back the Holy Land. Eventually the German king died and the French king left. Only the English king remained. The Muslim leader, Saladin, was a brilliant leader. He earned the respect of the English king and his men. Also, the English king earned the respect of Saladin and his men. But in the end, Saladin was victorious.
The Fourth Crusade
In 1201 French knights made it to Venice. They were ready to sail to the Holy Land. They didn't have funds to pay for the voyage. The Venetians were willing to pay, but only if the knights attacked Zara.Later on the knights attacked Constantinople. They defeated Constantinople, taking the treasures with them.
The End of the Crusades
Many crusades followed the fourth, but they failed. It ended where it started, the Muslims controlled the Holy Land.
